Artist Statement

Starting his creative journey with the foundation of photographic practice, Zhichao experiments with images and symbolic objects, weaving them together to find new narratives that offer fresh insights into our existing reality. These symbolic objects, serve as tangible evidence and echoes of existence within the Capitalocene—the epoch shaped by capitalism's profound effects.   Exploring the boundary of capitalism, he thinks is the pivotal juncture marking the direct intersection of capitalism with natural resources. He endeavours to uncover unique perspectives that allow for observation, reflection, and immersion within this settled, existing societal construct. In his current practice, he focuses on the construction site which he thinks reaches the ambiguous boundary between natural and anthropic. Especially, the fences about these sites mean protection but also concealment of where nature transforms into a capitalistic society.    He contends that engaging with these artefacts presents an avenue to not only acknowledge but also dissect and comprehend the expansive reach and influence of capitalism on human life.
